Today mom had a birthday party to celebrate Herb's 90th birthday. She served her famous scalloped potatoes and ham. Of the six guests that were able to attend, two walk with canes, one with a walker, and one has the beginnings of Alzheimer's. It was a bit comical, but yet sad when you see how aging has affected these people. I always think that my dad checked out early and in the best way. He didn't have to see any of his friends suffer from all the ailments that they have now. Anyway back to the party, there was singing and a cake with candles. Herb spent time telling stories from the old days. He has such a gift for story telling and it makes me sad that these stories will eventually die. Herb is so fortunate in that his mind is still very sharp even if his knees are not doing so well. His wife is the one with the alzheimer's and when she gave him a birthday hug there was still a twinkle in both of their eyes, it was cute. I think a marriage like theirs is hard to find these days. It was a good party for a good man.
